Step 1

Flight Information

Mumbai to Thailand — Chiang Mai (CNX) is the gateway to the north, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the main hub, and Phuket (HKT) for the south. Most flights connect direct or via Bangkok. For the Chiang Mai + Chiang Rai + Phuket itinerary, fly into Chiang Mai and out of Phuket.

🇮🇳 Mumbai
⟶
🇹🇭 Chiang Mai
₹25,000 – ₹38,000
Return economy · Avg. 1 stop via Bangkok · Book 4–6 weeks ahead

Air India, IndiGo, Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways connect well. Via Bangkok BKK with a 1.5–3 hr connection is the smoothest option. The connection Bangkok → Chiang Mai is domestic (about 1 hr).

🇮🇳 Mumbai
⟶
🇹🇭 Phuket (Exit)
₹28,000 – ₹45,000
Open-jaw: fly into Chiang Mai, return from Phuket · Saves travel time

For the north + south itinerary, book an open-jaw ticket — land in Chiang Mai (CNX) and depart from Phuket (HKT). This eliminates backtracking. Chiang Rai to Phuket has direct domestic Thai AirAsia flights (approx ₹3,500–6,000 one way).

💡

Pro tip: Book the Chiang Rai → Phuket domestic leg separately via the Thai AirAsia app. It is significantly cheaper than booking through Indian travel portals.

Step 2

Visa for Indians — Completely Free

Thailand offers visa-free entry to Indian passport holders for stays up to 30 days. No application, no fee, no embassy run. Just show up.

1
Visa-Free Entry — No Application Required
Indians can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days per visit. This applies at all major international airports (BKK, CNX, HKT) and major land borders. No prior application needed — just your passport valid for 6+ months.
₹0 — No Visa Fee
2
What You Need at Immigration
Passport valid for at least 6 months. Return/onward flight ticket. Proof of accommodation (hotel bookings). Evidence of sufficient funds — officially 20,000 THB (≈ ₹58,000) in cash or equivalent. In practice, show hotel bookings and your return ticket and you will be waved through.
3
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
From late 2024, Thailand introduced a digital arrival card system. Fill it in advance at the official Thailand e-Arrival portal before flying. It takes 5 minutes and is free. Having it done avoids filling paper forms at the airport.
Free · tdac.immigration.go.th
4
Travel Insurance — Strongly Recommended
Not mandatory but essential. Thailand's private hospital costs can be high. Get comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies. Indian insurers like Bajaj Allianz, ICICI Lombard, and Care offer good plans. Approximately ₹2,000–3,500 per family for 10 days.
Approx ₹2,000 – ₹3,500 per family
💡

Cash requirement: You technically need to show 20,000 THB (≈ ₹58,000) in cash per person or 40,000 THB per family at immigration. Keep this ready. In practice it is rarely checked, but carry enough that you are comfortable if asked.

Step 3

Choose Your Route

Thailand works for multiple itinerary styles. The north-focused route covering Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai is deeply offbeat and culturally rich. Phuket adds the beach element. Mix both for the full experience.

Route OptionCities / RegionsDurationBudget (per person)Best For
Option A — North Only Chiang Mai · Chiang Rai 5–6 days ₹45,000 – ₹60,000 Culture · Offbeat · Nature
Option B — North + South ⭐ Chiang Mai · Chiang Rai · Phuket 8–9 days ₹75,000 – ₹95,000 Best All-Round · Most Popular
Option C — Extended Chiang Mai · Chiang Rai · Bangkok · Phuket / Krabi 11–13 days ₹1,00,000 – ₹1,30,000 First-timers wanting full coverage
Option D — South Only Phuket · Phi Phi · Krabi 5–6 days ₹50,000 – ₹70,000 Beach holiday · Quick escape
💡

Our recommendation for first-timers: Option B — 8 nights covering Chiang Mai (3N), Chiang Rai (2N) and Phuket (3N). Fly into Chiang Mai, fly domestic Chiang Rai → Phuket, fly home from Phuket. Covers the best of north and south without rushing.

Chiang Mai

Thailand's cultural capital — ancient temples, lush national parks, jungle rafting, elephant sanctuaries and one of Asia's best night markets. The most underrated city for Indian travellers who usually skip straight to the beaches.

DAY 1
ARRIVAL
Airport → Pla Dat Temple → Doi Suthep → Night Bazaar
Check into your hotel near Loi Kroh Road. After settling in, head to Pla Dat Temple (Wat Pha Lat) — a hidden forest temple on the road up to Doi Suthep, almost never crowded. Then continue to Doi Suthep Temple — Chiang Mai's most iconic hilltop temple with panoramic views over the city. Evening: walk the famous Night Bazaar and Chiang Mai Night Market — great for shopping, local food and street snacks. Grab a traditional Thai massage here — best in Thailand and very affordable.
Car: ฿1,000–1,200 (≈ ₹2,900–3,500) Doi Suthep entry: ฿50/person (≈ ₹145) ~3–4 hrs for temples
DAY 2
FULL DAY
Doi Inthanon National Park + Maewang Bamboo Rafting + Krap Café
Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest peak (2,565m). The national park has stunning twin pagodas (built for King and Queen), multiple scenic waterfalls, and excellent trekking trails. The 1.5 hr trekking trail inside the park is worth it — scenic, cool and not crowded. On the way back, don't miss Maewang Bamboo Rafting — an absolute highlight where you raft on traditional bamboo rafts through a narrow jungle river. You can ask to combine 4 people on one raft and steer it yourselves. End with a stop at the quirky, photogenic Krap Café on the drive back. Optional swap: Replace Doi Inthanon with the Elephant Sanctuary + Sticky Waterfall — but don't miss the bamboo rafting regardless.
Car: ฿3,000–4,000 (≈ ₹8,700–11,600) Park entry: ฿300 adult, ฿150 child Trekking: ฿200/group Rafting: ฿800–1,000/raft
DAY 3
TRANSFER
Chiang Mai → Chiang Rai (Bus or Car)
Travel day from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai. The journey is about 3–3.5 hours. Take the Green Bus (most comfortable, AC) or hire a private car. Private car is recommended if travelling with family — allows stops at roadside viewpoints along the scenic mountain route. Afternoon in Chiang Rai: visit the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) — one of the most photogenic temples in all of Thailand, stunning blue and white interior. Then walk to the charming Lalita Café (entry ฿100/person) and the Big Buddha Temple.
Bus: ฿300–400/person (≈ ₹875–1,160) Private car: ฿3,000–3,500 (≈ ₹8,700–10,200) Lalita Café: ฿100/person
Hotel

Where to stay in Chiang Mai: Book near Loi Kroh Road — walking distance to the Night Bazaar, Nimman Road and restaurants. Good 4-star options: Orchid Hotel, Pingnakorn Huaykaew Hotel. Expect ₹3,000–5,000 per night for a good 4-star with breakfast for two.

Chiang Rai

Thailand's most culturally layered city — home to the White Temple, Blue Temple, Golden Triangle, tea plantations and the border of three nations. Far fewer tourists than Chiang Mai, and enormously rewarding for those who make the effort.

DAY 4
FULL DAY
Tea Plantation + Doi Tung Palace + Golden Triangle
Start the day at a scenic Tea Plantation in the hills north of Chiang Rai — many also have pineapple plantations alongside. The rolling green terraces are beautifully photogenic in the morning mist. Continue to Doi Tung Palace (entry ฿180/adult) — the former royal residence set in mountain gardens. Avoid the temple complex if time is short; the palace gardens and views are the highlights. End the day at the legendary Golden Triangle — the confluence of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos where three countries meet at the Mekong River. Take the short Golden Triangle boat ride (฿800/boat) to see the border point from the water and visit the Laos island casino. Deeply atmospheric at dusk.
Car: ฿2,000–3,000 (≈ ₹5,800–8,700) Boat ride: ฿800 (≈ ₹2,330) Doi Tung Palace: ฿180/adult
DAY 5
MORNING
White Temple + Singha Park → Flight to Phuket
Morning: Wat Rong Khun (White Temple) — one of the most stunning and unique contemporary temples in the world. The all-white structure encrusted with mirror glass is extraordinarily photogenic. Go early (8 AM) before tour groups arrive. If time allows, stop at Singha Park (entry ฿180–250/person) — a vast private farm estate with beautiful flower fields, a small zoo, cycling routes and open highland scenery. You can skip Singha Park if your flight timing is tight. Afternoon: fly to Phuket on Thai AirAsia (1.5 hrs, book domestic separately). Check into Patong Beach area.
White Temple entry: ฿100/person (≈ ₹290) Singha Park: ฿180–250/person Domestic flight: ₹3,500–6,000/person
Hotel

Where to stay in Chiang Rai: Book near the Clock Tower — the central landmark of Chiang Rai with excellent food and transport links. Good options: Sann Hotel, Selene Hotel. Approximately ₹3,000–4,500 per night for a solid 4-star. Avoid the Karen Village (฿300/adult) — it is ethically questionable and mostly tourist-staged.

Phuket

Thailand's most famous beach destination — turquoise water, dramatic limestone islands, seafood markets and the unmissable Bangla Road nightlife strip. Best paired with a day-trip to Phi Phi or James Bond Island.

DAY 6
FULL DAY
Phang Nga — Monkey Temple, Waterfall, Rafting, Zipline, Elephant
This is a packed adventure day in the lush Phang Nga province just north of Phuket. The standard package covers: Monkey Temple (Wat Suwan Kuha), a jungle waterfall swim, white water rafting on the Phang Nga River, a zipline through the jungle canopy, ATV ride and an ethical elephant ride. Most tour operators sell this as a full-day package. Book through your hotel or a reputable Patong operator. One of the best value adventure days in all of Southeast Asia.
Package: ฿1,000–1,200/person (≈ ₹2,900–3,500) Full day · All activities included
DAY 7
FULL DAY
Phi Phi Islands or James Bond Island
Choose one: Phi Phi Islands — stunning turquoise waters, Maya Bay (made famous by The Beach), vibrant coral, limestone cliffs. Speedboat gets you there in 1 hr. James Bond Island (Phang Nga Bay) — the dramatic rock island from The Man with the Golden Gun, sea kayaking through caves and mangroves. Both are excellent — Phi Phi for the beaches and snorkelling, James Bond for the kayaking and scenery. On the way back, visit Phuket Old Town — beautiful Sino-Portuguese architecture, colourful buildings and excellent cafés. If you visit on Sunday, the Sunday Night Market here is outstanding.
Speedboat: ฿1,250–1,600/person Big Boat: ฿2,000–2,400/person James Bond: ฿1,100–1,500/person
DAY 8
OPTIONAL
Optional 8th Day — Choose Your Add-on
If you have an extra day, pick from: Krabi day trip (4 islands + Railay Beach, great for rock climbing and kayaking), Similan Islands (world-class diving and snorkelling, seasonal Nov–May), Phuket City Tour (Big Buddha, Karon Viewpoint, Beach Rock Café, Tiger Reserve), or the spectacular FantaSea Show (Thai cultural extravaganza, approx ฿2,000/person). Bangla Road in Patong is best experienced at night — a sprawling 400m entertainment street that is unlike anything else in Southeast Asia.
Krabi tour: ฿1,500–2,200/person Similan: ฿3,500–4,500/person FantaSea: ฿2,000/person
Hotel

Where to stay in Phuket: Stay in the Patong Beach area — maximum 1–2 km walking distance to Bangla Road. Patong Heritage Hotel is excellent value and well-located. Budget ₹3,000–5,000 per night for 4-star with breakfast for two. Book well in advance for peak season (Dec–Jan).

Offbeat Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai reward slow exploration. These are the hidden gems and lesser-known experiences that most Indian tour packages completely miss.

Getting Around

Transport Inside Thailand

Thailand has good domestic connections. Ride apps work great in all major cities — no need to negotiate with tuk-tuks.

Mobile App
Grab & Bolt — Your Main Apps
Download both Grab and Bolt before arriving. They cover Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phuket well. Bolt is typically 10–15% cheaper than Grab. Set pickup and drop correctly on the map — both apps show live pricing with no negotiation. Same as using Ola/Uber in India. Saves a huge amount of time and money compared to negotiating with tuk-tuks.
Tip: In Chiang Rai, tuk-tuk and songthaew negotiation is still common — use Bolt to establish a price benchmark before negotiating.
Bus
Chiang Mai → Chiang Rai (Bus)
The Green Bus (Arcade Bus Terminal, Chiang Mai) is comfortable, air-conditioned and reliable. Journey takes about 3–3.5 hours. Departs frequently from 6 AM onwards. Book at the terminal or online via the Greenbus Thailand website. Private car is better for families — allows scenic stops along the mountain route.
Bus: ฿300–400/person · Private car: ฿3,000–3,500 total
Flight
Domestic Flights
Thai AirAsia and Nok Air connect major cities affordably. Key routes for this itinerary: Chiang Rai (CEI) → Phuket (HKT) — direct flight, approx 1.5 hrs. Book directly on the Thai AirAsia app for cheapest rates — significantly better than third-party booking sites. Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead for the best prices.
Chiang Rai → Phuket: ฿1,200–2,200 one way (≈ ₹3,500–6,400)
Van
Songthaew (Shared Red Truck)
Chiang Mai's iconic red shared trucks (songthaews) are an inexpensive way to get around. Standard rate is ฿30–50/person for short city hops. For Doi Suthep temple, dedicated songthaews run from the university gate — ฿40/person each way. Perfect for solo travellers and budget-conscious families comfortable with shared transport.
City hop: ฿30–50/person · Doi Suthep: ฿40 each way
Tuk-tuk
Tuk-Tuk (Negotiate)
Tuk-tuks are ubiquitous in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai but always require negotiation. Agree the price before getting in. Use Bolt or Grab to benchmark a fair price. Never accept the first quoted price — it is aimed at tourists. Tuk-tuks are more atmospheric than practical; use for short hops if the experience appeals.
Short city hop: ฿60–120 after negotiation
Scooter
Scooter Rental (Optional)
Available from ฿200–300/day in Chiang Mai and Pai. Best for Pai town exploration — distances are short and roads are manageable. Requires an international driving permit (IDP) technically, though enforcement is inconsistent. Not recommended in central Chiang Mai traffic. Perfect for Pai Canyon, Hot Springs and hillside exploration.
Daily rental: ฿200–300 · Fuel extra · Helmet included
Where to Eat

Indian Food in Thailand

Good news: Chiang Mai and Phuket have solid Indian restaurant options. Chiang Rai has just one — but it is reliable. Budgets below include a full Indian meal. Approx ฿300–400/person (≈ ₹875–1,160) for an Indian meal.

Multiple Indian Restaurants
Veg + Non-veg
CHIANG MAI
Chiang Mai has 5–10 Indian restaurants clustered near the Night Bazaar and Loi Kroh Road. Good mix of veg and non-veg. Standard quality, reliable and significantly cheaper than Phuket options. Ask your hotel for current recommendations as names change frequently.
Achcha Indian Restaurant
Veg + Non-veg
CHIANG RAI
The only Indian restaurant in Chiang Rai, and it is genuinely good. Solid North Indian menu, friendly staff. A lifeline for Indian travellers who want a dal-rice break from Thai food. Located near the Clock Tower area. Go for lunch or early dinner — it fills up with Indian tourists.
Kailash Parbat
Pure Veg
PHUKET · PATONG
The most reliable pure-veg Indian option in Phuket. Part of the Mumbai-based chain. Serves Sindhi and North Indian dishes. Familiar flavours, consistent quality. Well-located in Patong. Popular with Gujarati and Jain travellers especially.
Vrindavan
Pure Veg
PHUKET · PATONG
Pure veg restaurant with a wide Indian menu — good thalis, decent South Indian options and reliable sweets. Very popular with Indian families. Gets crowded at dinner. Arrive before 7:30 PM to avoid long waits in peak season.
Chotiwala
Pure Veg
PHUKET
Another solid pure-veg option in Phuket with good Rajasthani and Gujarati specialties. Chai, sweets and snacks also available. Suitable for Jain requirements with notice. Good for a light lunch between beach activities.
Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut
International
ALL CITIES
All three are present across Chiang Mai and Phuket. Taco Bell and Pizza Hut have veg-friendly menus. Good fallback when Indian food isn't available nearby. McDonald's and KFC also present. Burger King has chicken options but veg patties are available on request.
Thai Food

Thai food for Indians: Many Thai curries (Massaman, Panang, Green Curry) are vegetarian-friendly if you specify "no meat, no fish sauce." Ask for "jay" (เจ) — it means strictly vegan and is widely understood. Night markets are brilliant for safe, cheap, varied street food at ฿40–80 per dish.

Before You Go

Practical Information

Everything you need sorted before you land.

Mobile App
SIM Card
Best option: Take a Matrix card from India — approx 50 GB data + 100 mins local calling for ₹900. Works seamlessly in Thailand. Alternatively, buy a local Thai SIM on arrival: AIS, DTAC or TRUE Move H all offer tourist SIMs at the airport for ฿250–350 (approx ₹730–1,020) with 15–30 days validity and 30+ GB data. Local SIMs are slightly cheaper than Matrix if you buy outside the airport.
Credit Card
Money & Cards
Niyo Global or IndusInd Indus Forex card are excellent for Thailand — near-interbank THB rates, no markup. Load INR, spend in THB. ATMs are abundant but charge ฿200–220 per withdrawal (≈ ₹580–640) regardless of amount withdrawn — withdraw larger amounts less frequently. Carry some THB cash for markets, temples, songthaews and smaller establishments.
Money
Cash Requirement
Thai immigration technically requires you to show 20,000 THB (≈ ₹58,000) per person or 40,000 THB per family at entry. This is rarely checked but have it available. Beyond this, carry enough THB for daily activities — most night markets, smaller guesthouses and local attractions are cash-only.
Health
Health & Safety
Thailand's private hospitals (Bangkok Hospital, Bumrungrad) are world-class but expensive without insurance. Take comprehensive travel insurance. Mosquito repellent (DEET-based) is essential for jungle and evening activities in Chiang Mai. Drink only bottled or filtered water. Street food is generally very safe — stick to busy stalls with high turnover.
Temple
Temple Etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples — scarves are available to borrow at major temples. Remove shoes before entering any temple structure. Never point feet toward Buddha images. Photography is generally permitted but flash is often prohibited. Be quiet and respectful. Never touch a monk or hand anything directly to one (including women).
Flight
Air Tickets
Book international flights on Skyscanner or direct airline websites. For open-jaw routing (arrive Chiang Mai, depart Phuket), Skyscanner handles this well. Domestic Thai flights: Thai AirAsia app is cheapest for Chiang Rai → Phuket. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for best pricing. IndiGo and Air India offer direct and 1-stop connections from Mumbai.

Pro Tips

Essential Thailand Tips for Indians

✅
Don't skip Chiang Mai for just beaches. Most Indian tourists fly direct to Phuket and miss the north entirely. Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai are more culturally rewarding, far less crowded and significantly cheaper.
✅
Book Elephant Nature Park 2–3 weeks ahead. It sells out fast, especially in high season. This is the most ethical elephant experience in Thailand — don't substitute it with a ride-based alternative.
✅
Download Grab and Bolt before flying. Bolt is consistently cheaper. Both work flawlessly in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Phuket. No need to negotiate with tuk-tuk drivers.
✅
White Temple: arrive before 9 AM. After 9 AM, tour buses from Chiang Rai arrive and it becomes very crowded. The early morning light on the white and mirror exterior is spectacular.
✅
Carry THB cash for temples and markets. Many smaller temples, tuk-tuks, night markets and local restaurants are still cash-only. Keep ฿2,000–3,000 on hand at all times.
✅
Thai massage every day. At ฿250–350 (₹730–1,020) per hour, a Thai massage is among the best value you will find anywhere in the world. It is genuinely therapeutic, not just tourist entertainment.
✅
Book Chiang Rai → Phuket domestic flight on Thai AirAsia app directly. Indian travel portals add large markups on domestic Thai routes. The AirAsia app gives you the cheapest prices. Book 3–4 weeks ahead.
✅
Avoid Bangla Road touts for island tours. Book Phi Phi or James Bond Island through your hotel or a reputable operator near the Patong beachfront. Tout prices are often double the going rate.
✅
Visit Doi Mae Salong if you have a free day in Chiang Rai. Most Indian travellers have never heard of it. The Yunnanese tea village in the clouds is among the most unique and beautiful destinations in all of Thailand.
✅
Use the phrase "Jay" (เจ) for strictly vegan food. Thailand has Buddhist vegan traditions — restaurants and street stalls familiar with this will prepare oil-only, no fish sauce, no meat dishes without hassle.
✅
ATM fees are high — withdraw large amounts less often. Every ATM charges a flat ฿200–220 withdrawal fee regardless of amount. Use a Niyo Global card for card payments and minimise cash withdrawals.
✅
Bamboo rafting at Maewang is non-negotiable. Even if you skip Doi Inthanon, do not skip the bamboo rafting. It is the single most fun and unique activity in northern Thailand and costs under ₹3,000 for a full raft.

🟢 November to February is the ideal season — cool, dry and clear across the entire country including the north. Chiang Mai mornings can drop to 10–15°C in December–January — carry a light jacket. 🟡 March–April / September–October is acceptable with intermittent rain. May–August sees heavy monsoon across the south and smoke season haze in the north (March–April especially in Chiang Mai) — not recommended.
